Overweight? There is a risk for serious complications to you health. Time to action NOW!

What is obesity

Obesity is classified as having an excessive amount of body fat. Obesity is more than just a concern of how you look and feel. It increases risks for diseases and health issues such as heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. If you are extremely overweight, risks for serious health complications really skyrockets. Not to mention self-esteem issues and depression.

What risks are there for being overweight

If you are overweight, the chances of developing a number of serious health issues is higher.

High cholesterol and triglycerides, Type 2 diabetes, High blood pressure, Heart disease, Stroke, Cancer, Sleep apnea, Gallbladder disease, Gynecological problems, Erectile dysfunction, Osteoarthritis, Skin problems

This list is by no means complete, but you can see the seriousness of the issue of being overweight. Those are just the physical problems. What about quality of life problems?

Depression, Disabilities, Physical discomfort, Lack of energy, Sexual problems, Shame, Social isolation

These problems are issues that tend to make it harder for people to actually work toward a healthier life. DO NOT give up on yourself.

What can you do

I will not lie to you. Losing weight at the start is not easy. It does become easier as you keep at it and start seeing progress.
The first step and the most important:

I am making a commitment to myself to lose___ pounds.

You do not want to set a time frame for this. Everybody loses weight at different rates. Placing possibly unreal expectations on yourself does have a tendency to cause discouragement and may cause you to give up on yourself.
Next step:

Weigh yourself AND measure yourself.

You do both because fat is actually light weight for it's volume. Sometimes you will weigh yourself and not see a lot of weight loss. However, you if you keep track of the measurements, you will find the inches disappearing. So in this way, you will have 2 tools to use for encouragement.
Next step:

Make healthy changes in your eating lifestyle.

Eat more fruit and vegetables and whole grains. Start reducing portion sizes. Stay away from sugary and snacking type foods. Most importantly, stay away from fast foods. They are a dieter's nightmare.
Next step:

Begin increasing your activity level.

Get up and start moving around your home more. Go for daily walks, even a short 10-minute walk can greatly help. As you start to feel more energy and your body starts getting in better shape, pick up the pace and amount of time exercising. Be careful not to overdo it at first. If you are out of shape and overdo it, it can become a huge discouragement and you do not want that.
